Rafael Nadal’s tennis rival, Roger Federer, has been defeated by Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic in the quarter finals of the US Open at the Flushing Meadows. With this victory, Berdych has made his way to the final 4. Berdych won the match by 7-6(1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The way Federer had been thrashing his opponents in the tournament; he was expected to secure an easy victory over Berdych in the quarterfinals. But, that didn’t happen and the Czech player pulled off an upset against the World no. 1. However, it was not a one sided encounter and Berdych had to put a lot of efforts to win the match. Berdych smashed a total of 30 winners in the match including 14 aces.
Federer started the match on a very good note and got a breakthrough in the very first game of the match. He held his service in the next game and the score became 2-0. The next three games went with the serve and Federer was ahead by 3-2 in the set at the end of the fifth game. Federer lost his lead in the sixth game as Berdych broke his service to level the scores. Both the players held their service in the remaining games and the set went into the tie breaker. Federer was completely outplayed in the tie breaker. Berdych let the Swiss star win only one point in the tie breaker and sealed the first set.
In the second set, Berdych broke Federer’s service twice and took a profound lead of 5-2. Federer tried to make a comeback by winning the 8th and the 9th game in a row. The Swiss star had to win the 10th game to level the scores, but, Berdych managed to sneak another breakthrough in the 10th game and won the second set. Federer was down by 3-1 in the third set as well, but, all of a sudden, he played some delightful shots and won five games consecutively to grab the third set by 6-3. It seemed that the Swiss superstar was back on track, but, Berdych had some other ideas. He broke the service of Federer in the eighth game of the fourth set to take a lead of 5-3 and then, wrapped up the match by serving out the next game. In the semi final match, Berdych will play against Andy Murray of Great Britain.
